If you go down to the woods today, you won’t find a Rogue Theatre gypsy-style encampment hidden beneath the leafy beech canopy. Nor will you be able to take their mysterious twisty journey through the trees, following a makeshift path marked by red ribbons, strewn with faded photographs of lost and forgotten faces, curious suitcases spilling their contents onto the peaty forest floor.
You will have to imagine the heady smell of woodsmoke, the twinkling tea-lights, the chocolate welcome of Laverna (director Angelina Boscarelli) into the faded glamour of Lounge Limbo, the music-hall style stage, the chaotic dressing room set, the klezmer-infused laments of Julian Gaskell’s piano, accordion and violin, the sweet sweet voice of Lauren Vandike. And all before the performance proper began, weaving a poetic spell over the gathered throng. Immediately we became cocooned in a cabaret world inhabited by a damaged community scarred by war-time secrets that time can’t heal, masked by the wild, sad characters who dance and sing on stage.
Mysterious MC Jacob (Ollie Oakenshield) was protective and commanding, introducing his cast of girls; the fragile Celeste (Gemma Kempthorne) who dances to forget, the murderous Cupcakes (Becky Bordeaux), cooking away her angry heartbreak, and confused Ruby, torn away from her privileged life and handbag chihuahua.
It was theatre at its most enchanting, intimate and innovative – scary, funny, surprising and intriguing, with chocolate buns, tasty soup and a strong supporting cast thrown in; in essence a complete sensual delight.
I’m so thrilled I was among the lucky ones to enjoy such an all-embracing experience in the heart of Cornwall’s Tehidy Woods last weekend. It was but a three-night site-specific production, but it deserves to be shared on a global scale.
